The ayat was recited by Hazrat Yunus A.S when he was trapped in the belly of a whale. By reciting this ayat he admitted his faults, and he was saved from his distress.

The final third part of the recitation: Inni kuntu minaz-zalimin is seeking forgiveness from Allah عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ (Azza Wa Jall). It can be roughly translated to English meaning: ‘Surely, I am from among the wrongdoers’. It is an acknowledgement of ones sin(s), which in turn includes a humble request of forgiveness. Allah عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ (Azza Wa Jall) declares in the holy Qur’an that ‘Surely Allah عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ (Azza Wa Jall) loves those who turn unto him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves’.
