The Kaaba (Ka’bah or Kabah) door is three metres high, two metres wide and half a metre deep. In the pre-islamic era a Kaaba door did not exit. There was simply an open entrance and exit portal, one on the eastern wall and one on the western wall. At some point during its time the western door was blocked. According to historians the first door was built by King Tubba (430CE) which was made of wood. There have been a number of different Kaaba doors over time with the longest standing Kaaba door being from the Ottoman era which was used for over 300 years.

The current Kaaba door was ordered to be built by King Khalid bin Abdul Aziz in 1978 and is still in use today. It is made of 99.99 pure gold and contains 280KG of pure gold. The Kaaba door is partly covered with a richly decorated curtain and is part of the Kiswa which covers the whole of the Kaaba. Each year, on the 9th day during Hajj (Dhu al-Hijjah), the Kiswa is changed whilst pilgrims have left for the plains of Mount Arafat. The Kiswa and the covering on the Kaaba door contains a large number of Quranic verses and inscriptions.
